Even More Ottobre

Every once in a while I find a good fabric at Wal-Mart! This knit fabric came from the $2.00 per yard table, and it's nice! Both the heart fabric and the solid knit came from Wal-Mart, and I also bought another piece in a solid brown. The fabric is lightweight, and sewed up nicely.

From 1 yard of fabric I was able to sew two tops---one for Emmy and one for Ellie. Emmy is wearing the second "Hugs" t-shirt that I've made from the 1/08 issue of Ottobre. The first shirt actually came out better, but I like this version with the knit binding instead of woven. Emily looks like a bit of a sheep dog, but isn't she adorable?!

Ellen is wearing "Daisy," also from the 1/08 issue (the only issue I own at the moment). I measured Ellie to determine her size since I am not very familiar with the European sizes. I ended up making the size 140, but you know, I discovered that I should have measured the pattern piece for length. This top fits Ellen fine, but it really could stand to be 4-5 inches longer. Ellen likes her shirts longer than this, but she can always layer it with a camisole to lengthen the look.

For those of you who sew regularly with Ottobre, can you tell me if the patterns generally run short in length? I lengthened the Rose dress and Misty skirt that I made last week, and I see that this Daisy also needed lengthening. One thing, I will be sure to check length measurements next time!

  2. I love it, I love it, I love it...

The Shirts and the fabric is soooo cute...

To bad our Wal-Marts here don't carry any fabrics... ;-(

  3. Those t-shirts are cute!

I hardly ever shop in Walmart, but last week I was there, and was shocked to see the fabric section gone! They still have a few craft supplies and things like thread and zippers.

  4. While I was shopping at my local Hancock Fabrics (Chicago) I overheard the workers talking about Wal-Mart getting rid of their craft section! There go those low prices, but I preferred shopping at fabric stores anyway. :)

  6. Great job!

I lengthen ALL patterns for my kids (and myself) so I can't comment on whether Ottobre is any shorter than other pattern companies. I think some of the Ottobre styles are supposed to be short - like the rose dress. I lengthened my daughters over 2" and it is still 2" above the knee!

  9. Very cute tops (and girls too)! I love your Walmart fabric find, lucky you! Occassionally I find a gem there too. I too always have to lengthen Ottobre stuff, but my kids are one the tall and thin side so that could be why for me.

  10. Very cute! I may have to get an Ottobre subscription for my birthday in June!

Your youngest and my Claire are very similar (of course they're only a few weeks apart in age). I like to say that Claire is more hair than girl! :)

  11. It sounds like the general consensus is that Ottobre patterns need to be lengthened. Thanks for all the lovely comments!

  12. Thanks for sharing. I just got that Ottobre earlier this week (got on ebay and came from Finland in less than a week). I was wondering about the length and I notice that even regular tshirts in Walmart are too short for our taste for our girls. They look okay on the hanger or shelf but are short on my girls. It's the "style".

Thanks for the tip on using a knit on the Hug shirt because that is the one I thought I would try first and wondered about the stretchability with a woven even though it was bias.
