Crochet Edged Baby Blanket

In 2007 I posted a 'tutorial' of how I crochet an edging on flannel to make receiving blankets. Last week I finished a few more blankets. I made up a new stitch for this sweet rosebud blanket, and so I decided to share it with my readers. And when I say "made up" the stitch, that just means that I didn't get it from a book (although I'm sure it's in many crochet books), but that I made it up after a few false starts after deciding to deviate from my usual stitch. I like this stitch because the whole thing is done in only 2 rounds, instead of 3 or 4. The result is a beautiful scalloped edge that is quick and easy.

enjoy,
Ruth

Directions: Round 1: *sc, ch 1* all the way around the blanket, with the stitches as close together or not, as you wish. My sc stitches are approx. 1/4" apart. Round 2: *sc, 3dc, sc* in every other space between the sc stitches.

  1. Very pretty! I've made quite a few in the past. When I had our first child I didn't realize people actually used "unfinished" receiving blankets as my SIL and Sister only had ones with crotched edges :)

  3. Ruth,
thanks so much for sharing. It almosts look like a shell stitch. Ever since I saw your blankets I had wanted to do one. I finally bought those blades to cut the fabric i talked to you about and made one up, but with fleece. I like your use of the flannel. I will have to try it on flannel next time.
your blankets lookk lovely all stacked and ready for a home.

  11. This could be done on other edges, too. I'm thinking pillow cases, towels, hankies (smaller thread), kitchen towels, little girls collars... You are making me want to abandon the knitting I have going for some crochet love.

  12. Sorry. It should have said "little girls' collars" — with an apostrophe.

  14. Ruth, I used your new pattern as inspiration for my own design. Mine looks very similar, but my crocheting is pretty tight so my scallops were coming out really short with the double crochets. :) Thanks for posting!
