Sharp Crochet Hook Review
Over 4 years ago I posted this tutorial on how I make crochet-edged baby blankets. Sarah left a comment on that post, writing, "Thanks for this! How do you poke your crochet hook through the fabric?
Mine is just too dull to get the job done. Is there a special sharp
hook you can use?" Up until today, my reply would have been that I just use an ordinary size 8 steel crochet hook and keep wiggling the tip until it goes through the fabric.
Today my reply would be this: Go to sharpcrochethook.com and order one of the sharp, pointy crochet hooks!
This week I tried out
the sharp crochet hook on the pictured baby blanket, and yes, the hook
really is pointed and easily poked through my flannel fabric. I was
able to crochet round 1 of the blanket more quickly with this hook than
with my normal, blunt tip hook. Now I did find that I still had to
wiggle the hook a bit, but only because I wanted to ensure that the hook
went between the fibers of fabric without tearing the fibers.
All in all, I'm pleased with this pointed hook and will definitely use
it on all my baby blankets.

After seeing some of your posts on the crocheted edgings I wanted to learn how. I bought some yarn and a hook and a little pamphlet about teaching yourself to crochet. Unfortunately I didn't get very far--we had a daughter get married and a daughter-in law give birth to a new baby within the last six months so I've been pretty fulfilled. Perhaps if I had this new crochet hook I could try again. My mother used to make these blankets and she would have them stitched with a wing-tip needle to make little holes to make it easier to poke the needle through.
ReplyDeleteOh, I know! I would make edgings on my pillowcases... And the pillows on the sofa... And then the blankets... And the girls bedding... And I don't think I would stop ever again if I had one of those!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not interested in the giveaway but I wanted to comment on how pretty crochet edged blankets are.:)
ReplyDeleteRuth,
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to win this! It would make crocheting these so much easier! I love these blankets. I have been thinking about you and wondering how you have been!We were in OK in July and I was going to call and see if we could get together but Steve got really sick and we had to leave! :o(
Love, Heather
i would love to win this. id make fine lacey-type macramed edges on pillow cases and soft edgings on receiving blankets for my friends new baby :)
ReplyDeleteI would make a baby blanket as well. One of the teachers I work with is having her second baby in February. And with my speed and the special crochet hook, I could just about make it!
ReplyDeleteI have lots of baby blankets to make (I know 5 or 6 pregnant ladies!) so I would definitely make some flannel blankets with crocheted edgings like you did! Thank you for the giveaway :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to make a bunch of flannel baby blankets for my friends who are expecting. I can also imagine adding a crocheted edging around a plain sweater or even a T-shirt to give it a little feminine flair.
ReplyDeleteMy first attempt with this hook would be to crochet pillowcase edgings. Right now, I blanket stitch around all edges (which is quite time consuming), and then start crocheting the edge. This hook sounds like it would be a major time-saver!
ReplyDeleteMy mom would make these babby blankets. It would be great to make these for my friends that are becoming grandmas. Pillow cases would be great also.

I have some little socks I want to crochet edgings on!
ReplyDeleteI always wanted to make these baby blankets along with tablecloths or dollies, anything that needed an edge. It would be nice to have one of these crochet hooks to help the projects along. Have been enjoying your blog. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried crocheting an edging simply because the idea of trying to get the hook through was offputting; I'd love to try with this, probably a table runner or similar.
ReplyDeleteI have used your tutorial in the past

and can only imagine the difference a sharp hook would make for the next time. Please enter me in the giveaway. Thank you and thanks for your tutorial. ~Susan
Baby blankets and burp cloths. I think they are so cute. I have a friend that has made many for one of my daughters, but now I need to learn for other future babies! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI need one of those. Have a pile of flannel waiting for edging. Thanks for sharing this info. Very helpful, Ruth!
ReplyDeleteMy Grandma used to crochet baby blanket edges many years ago ~ I guess she was ahead of her time! :~P
ReplyDeleteI would love to win one of these hooks. Think they would really save my poor old fingers!
Your edge is so dainty and sweet!
baby blankets, pillowcases, bonnets!
ReplyDeleteI would make wee baby blankets out of flannel. I'm always on the look for hand made baby gifts to make up, and these would be perfect for warmer weather use. And so cute!
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to trim pillow cases with a crochet edging (a la 'rosehip') but never got round to it - this sharp crochet hook would be perfect!!
ReplyDeleteI would make a baby blanket for my friend. Thanks for sharing, would love to win.
ReplyDeleteIt would definitely be used on making more blankets. The blankets are such an easy baby shower gift.
ReplyDeleteNeat!!! Please enter me in the giveaway. :) Blessings!
ReplyDeleteOh, I would love to win this!!! I've been eyeing up these blankets and your tutorial for some time now. I even tried to make one for my little one when I was expecting him. All of my supplies are still in a bag in the closet because I was too afraid to jam that hook into the fabric! (He's almost 2 now). I would love to try again. They are so pretty!
ReplyDeleteThis hook sounds great! I like making crochet edged blankets. I read through some of the responses. Adding edging to pillowcases would be great! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeletethis is a great idea! I usually do a simple hem with a wing needle to poke my holes, but this looks like a much easier way to go. pretty blanket, BTW
ReplyDeleteI bet it would work on the bottom of hand-towels too.

I have a new grandson so I would use it to make some very cute flannel receiving blankets.
ReplyDeleteDear Ruth and Jessica,
ReplyDeleteI have made at least two dozen blankets since your original post. I am the most popular great aunt around! I have never given a gift that has received more rave reviews or has been more appreciated. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your wonderful ideas! I would love the new hook to use on my ongoing projects. Two more little ones are on the way!!!
Hi If I won I would give it to my daughter (who has never heard of one) and kindly make me lovely old fashioned hankies edged with this wonderful gadget!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'd just make more baby blankets and burp pads...
ReplyDeleteI would totally make the baby blanket it's absolutely fabulous!
ReplyDeleteHow fun. I've never heard of this crochet hook. I'd use it to make more blanket sets. They don't sell on Etsy well, but they sure are nice gifts. :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to learn to do this - the blanket is so beautiful. I would probably make a blanket or edge some other item. I love lacy things.
ReplyDeleteI love the pillowcase idea, so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI would edge blankets and pillowcases. I tried once before but got frustrated with having to jab the hook into the fabric. This would make it so much easier. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI have crocheting since I was 12 and now I am a mom of 3 lovely young girls and hope to pass on the beauty of crochet to at least one of them.

I love making blankets with crocheted edgings. We're in the process of adopting our fifth child, and I've been making them like crazy. I would LOVE one of these hooks! Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI love your site. Our daughter received a crochet edged flannel blanket and loves it. So feminine in pink and used as a carseat cover. I would like to get one of the hooks so I can make more for her. I can't locate those hooks anywhere. I hope I am one of your very lucky winners.
