Birthday Pattern Weights
Today is my birthday! Following Trudy's example, I am giving a birthday gift to one randomly chosen reader of Sew Chic. Your gift is a set of pattern weights, made by me.
The weights are covered in brown fabric from Moda designer Sandy Gervais. You will receive a set of two large and two medium sized weights. The large weights are 4.5" in diameter and bigger than the metal washers you will find in your typical hardware store. The medium weights are 3.5" in diameter.
To win this set of weights, leave a comment on this post telling me if you use pattern weights when sewing or if you use pins. Or tell me what your favorite sewing notion is. For an extra entry, become a follower of Sew Chic and leave another comment to that effect. I'll close this giveaway next week, sometime between April 10-12, and I'll announce the winner then. Because these weights are heavy, I can only ship to addresses in the United States.
More pattern weights are also available for sale in my Etsy shop.
Happy Sewing!

What beautiful weights - I'm intrigued. Yes I use weights - random ones, I'm afraid - like a heavy duty stapler I keep on my sewing table (does a great job, nice non-skid bottom), you get the picture. Would love to be included in your draw, with thanks!
ReplyDeleteI use pins, but would love to try some pattern weights. They're beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog too.
ReplyDeleteI'm already a follower, for whatever that counts for. I typically use pins but am interested in trying new things. They're quite beautiful!

I happen to use pins, but would love to try out those beautiful weights. My favorite sewing notion is a measuring guide that I got free with a fabric order. I love it when I'm making hems. Not trying to promote fabric.com, but here's a picture of it:

ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! I hope you have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteI use pins, but the pattern weights have always sounded like a good idea!
I use pins, and I'd have to say I'm so new to sewing I've never heard of weights... but those look great!
ReplyDeleteI use...YOUR pattern weights (I think I even see same fabric mine on in the above picture)! I got them during one of the coops on TEU. LOVE them, but could always use more :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!!! I use pins, but I would love to try the weights.
ReplyDeleteI am already a follower, so I guess my name gets put in twice?
Happy Birthday!!!!! I use pattern weights. They are actually some random washers that I got from DH. Your weights are sooo much prettier than mine.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower too! :-)
ReplyDeleteI use pins, but am new to sewing and would like to try out weights. Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!! I hope you have fun celebrations planned!
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous. I am a self-taught sew-er, and only recently learned about weights. A brilliant idea!!
Thanks for the chance to win!
These are great - count me in! I've only just bought a rotary cutter and mat, so I plan to start using pattern weights with my new set-up.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday!
I use pins - but have wanted to try weights!
ReplyDeleteI use weights--but mine are just the big washers sans decoration. Yours are lovely! Weights are among my favorite notions--also dental picks and bamboo skewers.
ReplyDeleteI love the things you have made, especially for your youngest. Gives me inspiration when sewing for my DGD!

Never used weights....would love to give them a go!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Ruth!!!! I am already a follower and LOVE your blog.
ReplyDeleteI pray you have a beautiful and blessed day on this Good Friday. And I pray your Easter is beautiful and meaningful too.

I use weights - very unpretty, non-fabric wrapped washers.
ReplyDeleteI use weights most of the time and pins once in a while. Mine are washers from the hardware store...plain, boring ol' washers. They do make a nice clinking sound when stacking them back up!
ReplyDeleteThese do look nice! I have always used pins, I've never really tried using weights. I usually cut fabric on my wood floor (if I can avoid dog-bunnies, lol), so I guess these would do fine.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite sewing item is my pink tomato pin cushion! It makes my life easier, and looks pretty goofy at the same time :)

ReplyDeleteHi Ruth. You betcha' I use weights. I only have a couple, tho. I have made up a lot of patterns on brown paper...especially purses and bags. I found that the weights work wonders. So, I need some for my regular patterns. I tried to make some but they did not turn out so great.
ReplyDeleteI hope I win!
Happy birthday! I used rulers and such as pattern weights. I love yours weights--so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI'm already a follower.
ReplyDeleteI have been secretly following your blog for sometime. It was the first time I had ever heard of pattern weights. That very day I went out to Home Depot to buy the largest I could find and try it out. OH MY GOSH! It was the most enlightening thing!! To never have to pin again to cut a pattern? It has saved me hours and hours of work! I tried finding those 4" weights and it's impossible! So if I could win these, I would be ecstatic! Thanks for entertaining me with your blog.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower and I use rulers, phones, pencils, erasers, anything that comes to hand. I'd love some pattern weights though and yours are gorgeous! (My most used notion is, alas, a seam ripper...)
ReplyDeleteI use weights--I use the 2.5 pound weights from our weight set! And some canned food from the kitchen cupboards if I need more than 2 weights.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! I use pins or occasionally something heavy. I haven't tried pattern weights but think yours are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYour weights look lovely! I usually use pins or household objects. :)
ReplyDeleteRebecca

Happy Happy Birthday!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've never used weights but I'm told its the way to go.
I'm a follower too!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Ruth! and thanks for this great giveaway opportunity! :*) . I use knives for weights...when we moved, I was missing knives and finally found them in a packed up sewing project. Ugh! I would LOVE to have some designated weights!
ReplyDeleteI follow you on Google Reader.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway! I use a combo of both usually. Id love to have your beautiful weights holding down my pattern!
ReplyDeleteI have never used pattern weights -- just pins -- but I sure would love to try to win a set.
ReplyDeletegripentrog@tds.net
Happy Birthday! I'm already a faithgul follower. It just so happens that I do use weights--but I use food cans. So it would be nice to have a more "classy" style of weight. My favorite notion is a seam gauge!
ReplyDeleteI have never tried weights. Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI signed on to follow!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! I use weights. I have a set my mother gave me several years ago. I love them. I've also found that if I trace patterns on the squared pattern material I don't even need weights or pins when I cut out patterns. Thanks for the drawing. I think your weights are too cute!
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower now. Way cool!
ReplyDeleteI've always used pins, but am up for trying something new, especially when the something new comes in such a pretty package!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful set of weights. Since I don't have weights, I use pins.
ReplyDeletePins, would love to have a set of those weights though. How is the new coverstitcher working out?
ReplyDeleteMarie
YES!!! I have been wanting a set of these.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great giveaway!!
I am already a follower.
ReplyDeleteI have always used pins, and never heard of pattern weights before now, but I would LOVE to to try them....think of all the "pricked fingers" that would save! lol. Happy Birthday!!
ReplyDeleteMorgan M.
I am following your blog! (added it to favorates...so glad I found it!!!)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Morgan M.
I use weights, too - knives, forks, and spoons, depending on the size of the pattern piece. I need some of your weights just so I can look more professional!
ReplyDeleteI've always used pins. However, I'd love to use weights...I just don't own a set yet!

I use pins because I'm way behind. I never knew anything about pattern weights until I starting reading your blog. I would love to try them, they look very pretty and much more kid friendly! :)
ReplyDeleteI use the Dritz pattern weights but would love the flatness of the ones you offer!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite sewing tool is definitely my rotary cutter, but my Gingher shears are much adored!
Thanks for the chance to win, and Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday Ruth!!! I hope your day was blessed!!
ReplyDeleteLove, Heather
Happy Belated Birthday Ruth!
ReplyDeleteI use pins and didn't realize that there actually were weights to put down to keep the fabric from shifting. I guess my can goods can go back into the cupboard...Yours are lovely. I'd love to win your give away!
Happy Birthday! I've never used pattern weights but the idea is intriguing. I just know that if I win I'd use your beautiful pattern weights.
ReplyDeleteLinda
I use pattern weights but mine are just washers from the hardware store not pretty ones like these.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower of your blog.
Happy belated birthday!

I just discovered your blog site today and got really excited. I absolutely use weights and love using them instead of pins...but I must say, when I saw yours, they are fabulous!!!!! The one tool I love is my rotary cutter by Gingher and the button hole guide ruler by using this baby, your buttonholes are always spaced precisely.
ReplyDeleteI use pattern weights. I have two of the white sets from years back. Yours are gorgeous!!! Happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm a follower! : )
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, my birthday is on Sunday the 11th, great month. I've never used these weights but I am intrigued and think they would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteI am a pinner, but am ready to convert! Thanks for the giveaway!

Oh, and I'm a follower!
ReplyDeleteI also follow your blog!
ReplyDeleteI love those weights!! They are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I am already a follower too! I love you girls!
ReplyDeleteThis follower uses both. I buy pdf patterns for purses and I tend to use weights. (Which are literally 3 lb. weights that are on my library floor!) But for commercial patterns, I use pins.
ReplyDeleteI'm new to following patterns and have only used pins. But I love the idea of using weights. Woohoo!
ReplyDeleteHello! I am a follower so this is my second entry! Hurray!!
ReplyDeleteI use weights when I am cutting with my rotary cutter. I'd love to win the weights.

I am also a follower of your blog and really would love to have the weights.

ReplyDeleteObviously already a follower! ;)
ReplyDeleteI much prefer to use weights, but mine aren't covered with pretty fabric!
ReplyDeleteI am also a follower of the blog. It's very inspirational.
ReplyDeleteI'm one of the ones who left a comment but no address. I do follow your blog and really enjoy reading it. I don't have any real weights--I just use objects on hand, scissors, pin cushion, etc.

i only started recently using weights (in no small part to your regular mention of them). canned tomatos may work fine, but i've convinced myself that pretty weights will keep any monotony out of cutting fabric~
ReplyDeleteI use weights when I cut out patterns. Your pattern weights look lovely.
ReplyDeleteRose in SV
I use both, depending on what I'm cutting out. Though my current pattern weights are actually river rocks!
ReplyDeletei just signed up to follow your blog--been meaning to for as long as i've been reading, but never could be bothereed to create account. thanks for offering the weights as incentive
ReplyDeleteI would love to use weights instead of pins--so time consuming!
ReplyDeleteI love all the different fabrics you use to cover them.
Hi Ruth! A very late Happy Birthday to you!
ReplyDeleteI have never used pattern weights but would love to try them.
I follow your blog (and enjoy it.)
ReplyDeleteI wanted to say that your use of color and patterns inspire me. The weights you have made are not only utilitarian, they are beautiful. I like being able to make things that are both pleasing to the eye, but are useful in everyday life.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
I use both. Growing up o always used weights- my moms- which were round and had little pins on the bottom. Then I moved, and she moved, and neither or us have since found such great weights. Yours look mighty close, and much lovelier covered in sweet fabric! Thanks for the chance to win. I have a fun spring dress that I have been waiting to cut out!
ReplyDeletemlskennedy@gmail.com
I use both pins and weights--yours are really cool. I'd love to own some. It's really difficult to choose my favorite sewing tool. Besides my Bernina, I'd probably say my little gingher scissors is (are?) about my most used tool. I use them all the time at the machine and also when handstitching. Thanks for sharing your birthday! I have been following your blog for several months now--love it!
ReplyDeleteYay! What a cute give away I would love some weights :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday

I use a combination of pins and "objects." It would be grand to have real pattern weights instead of whatever is handy and heavy. Please enter me in your birthday pattern weights drawing.
ReplyDeletemlwright29 at hotmail dot com
I use pins and objects found around the house. A set of weights would be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteiloveblogcontests@gmail.com
I've wondered about these! They're lovely.

I love the weights that you made. They are lovely! :) It's a shame, but I don't own weights yet which I should have for an easy cutting and sewing. I'd love to have some. :)
