Questions and Answers

Thank you for all the wonderful, encouraging comments that were written on the previous post about the shorts and shirt I made for my son. Comments are fun to read---thank you, thank you, thank you. I love comments. : ) Among the comments were a few questions that I'll answer here:

MaryPat R said..."Is there a zip in that fly or is it just for show?"

The shorts have a mock fly front--no zipper. The button is also just for show, although it never shows because Jacob does not tuck his shirts in. :)

Jessica said..."can you explain sometime how to do this waistband treatment?"

Jeannine said..."I too would like to know how you did the waistband."

Jessica and Jeannine, I intended to write a post with a pictures of how I did the waistband, but honestly and truly, I have not sewn a single stitch since I finished the shorts and shirt. Soon, I hope to make more shorts, and I'll be sure to take lots of pictures. Until then, here is a very brief explanation of what I did: Fold the waistband in half lengthwise and press; sew the short ends of waistband to form a circle; sew the waistband to the garment--right side of waistband to the wrong side (the inside) of the shorts; enclose circle of elastic inside the waistband; turn up the seam allowance of the unsewn long edge of waistband; topstitch the waistband to the garment (you'll be topstitching on the right side of the garment), stretching elastic as you topstitch. I also topstitched through the center of the waistband, again stretching the elastic flat as I sewed.

KarenH said..."Don't you love those surprise fabrics at WM? I'm going to be really sad when their fabric depts are gone for good."

Yes, Karen, I always check the fabric department at WM because I never know what I may find. Surprisingly, lately I've found several nice fabrics at WM--and it makes me happy. I hope that my local WM will keep their fabric dept. for a good long time!

Tammy said..."I just started my blog and don't really know what I'm doing yet. I would love some pointers from you guys! How do you get people to actually read your blog?"

Tammy, I wish I had an answer to give you about blog readership, but I really don't know why people read this blog and come back if they do. Jessica and I don't purposely set out to get readers or comments, and we don't "market" our blog. Don't get me wrong---we love having readers, and we love the comments. I'll admit that it's nice knowing that a few people read what we write. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer, but if you do a bit of google searching, you will find many articles about starting and growing a blog.

Your question has made me ponder about why I blog. Sometimes it all seems so trivial to me. Does writing on my blog really matter? Just why do I blog about my sewing? This could be a whole post in itself. But to sum it up briefly...hmm.... The reasons why I started blogging and why I continue to blog are different. Jessica and I initially started this blog in 2005 (wow! has it really been that long ago?!) because she was getting married and moving from home, and we wanted a way to share our mutual love of sewing with each other. Also, the blog was a way to document the process of sewing Jessica's wedding dress. Record keeping and documentation of sewing projects was a big motivation for me to blog. I don't keep everything I've made forever, and before blogging I wasn't good at taking pictures of my projects. Having a record has been helpful in many ways. For example, when I enter items in the county fair each fall, I come back to the blog to see what I've sewn the past year that can be entered. No way would I remember otherwise.

Reasons why I continue to blog are varied---record keeping, of course; sharing ideas, tips and techniques; perhaps helping others with what I've learned; oh, there are more reasons that I won't go into, but one last thought about why I blog is community. The sewing community is awesome. I have been encouraged, motivated, challenged, and inspired by so many wonderful people! Blogging, for me, has been fun and enjoyable. If you care to comment, I would love to know your reasons for blogging.

And because it seems I can't write a post without a picture, I'll post this one of Jacob wearing his shorts after they had been through the laundry a few times.

Thank you, JC and Meg...

Thank you, JC and Meg, for awarding SewChic the Sisterhood Award.

It's so much fun to "meet" other ladies who love to sew, and to read your sewing blogs. How wonderful it is to be part of such a network of sewing friends. I read more sewing blogs than I care to admit, and each one deserves this award. : )

Rated E for Excellent!

Pam at Off The Cuff Style recently gave us a blog award...a badge of Excellence. I am so honored to receive the badge! Pam's kind words about our blog really blew me away. Thanks, Pam!

Here's a few of my favorite sewing blogs that definitely deserve a badge of excellence. If they so desire, they can pass along the award to any blogs they feel deserve it. Enjoy!

Christina at Assorted Notions makes the most awesome stylish clothes! I'm envious of her style and her ability to sew so well with knit fabrics.

Cindy's blog, Sew Blessed, is such a sweet and refreshing place to stop by. She does beautiful work, and I always enjoy seeing the fun sewing and craft projects she does for and with her little girls.

Another blog that I enjoy is On Pins and Needles. Michele kind of reminds me of Mom...never without a project in the works, and always sewing for her large and happy family.

Jessica

I echo Jessica's words of appreciation to Pam for her kind words about our blog. I love reading Pam's blog and have learned so much from her!

Many of my favorite sewing blogs have already been awarded this Badge of Excellence, but I'll add a few more:

Summerset at Pins and Needles sews some amazing garments, many from vintage patterns. Summerset's attention to details makes her sewing so extraordinary--her garments look fabulous on the inside as well as on the outside.

Another of my favorite blogs is Stitches and Seams. I would never have learned how to use my coverstitch machine without Debbie's coverstitch tutorials. Debbie is such a talented seamstress!

I like to read Astrid's blog, Connecting the Dots, not just for her beautiful photography, but also for the cute little outfits she makes for her children. Her Ottobre outfits, in particular are simply adorable!

Happy sewing,
Ruth

Does anybody read Turkish?

On another blog, 10marifet.org, I came across pictures of one of Jessica's tea cozies and this apple dress I sewed. But I can't read Turkish! Can anybody translate? (smile)

SewChic News from Kate Marie

1. Warning to our Readers:

Jessica had to spend a few days with us this week because her husband was departed to Texas for a funeral. She was quite disturbed to be without him for so long, but we kept her busy by playing Scrabble, talking blogs, and making her do all our house work. I think she and mom had too much time to talk about blogs because this morning they excitedly told me, "We're going to redesign SewChic!".... Now, lest you get the wrong idea, that must be interpreted, "You're (as in Katie Marie) going to redesign SewChic!" They don't really have a clue about how to redesign a blog and I do. So guess what? I have the awesome privilege of working with them to get a new look up! Apart from the challenge of trying to please both of them (plus me) at the same time, this is going to be fun! Get ready...I can't promise how soon it will be, but I wanted to warn you --you know, so you don't load up SewChic one morning and fall off your chair when it looks totally different.

2. Returning Good for Evil

I'm still working on forgiving Jessica for posting those awful pictures of me last week. Since she posted that post, I've been scheming lots of ways to get back at her. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to capture any horrible shots of her, so I'm going to do something else.... Deep inside, I know I'm not really supposed to return evil for evil so I've decided to return good for evil --with a nice photo of Jessica and me.

Don't we look like sisters?

P.s. I haven't finished my apron yet...Sorry, Jess! I'm not too much of an apron sewist person. :-)

-----edit-----

This is "Mom," and yes, I do have a clue (however small) about html and blogs and such. :-) Thanks, Katie, nice post.

Announcing....

We are teaming up with my mother-in-law, Julie, to start another blog...The Little Red Hens, a cooking blog. There you will find lots of yummy recipes, menus, and pictures. We also hope to include gardening and homemaking tidbits. Right now the blog is still in the beginning stages, but we would love for you to hop over and take a look!

Cheers, Jessica

Regenerate our Culture

Not sewing or wedding related, but this is worthy of mention. My 3rd daughter, Katie, has been privileged to be a part of the tech team of ROC and suggested I post about it. Regenerate Our Culture (ROC) is a brand new organization with the "goal of regenerating our nation’s worldview away from the post-modernism holding it and back to the Christian worldview it was first built on." Regenerate Our Culture will include a web magazine and a blog network highlighting the top 15 blogs from Christian teens. I encourage you to go read more about it. ROC will be officially launching on March 15th, so be sure to help spread the news to the young people you know.

Grand Plans

Wow, I can't believe this is finally up and running! I am so excited! I'm posting my first post. Yahoo!

Many thanks to Katie (my 15 year old sister) for helping us get this together. It wouldn't have happened without her! The background was made from a photo of a vintage bedspread that I got last summer at a garage sale and I am amazed that Katie was able to morph the picture, and fade it out, and make it look just so. She is awesome.

Doesn't it look beautiful? So chic.

I have lots of grand plans for this blog...pictures, musings, links, and sewing discussions. We'll see where it goes...I have to find time to start sewing again first!

Coming soon:
The wedding dress
The bridesmaid dresses
A new cute skirt for self
Christmas presents (posted after Christmas. he he.)

And now for a picture of my wonderful fiancee and me!
Cheers,
Jessica
